Yippee! It’s TODAY, my favourite day!! “What, why?!” I hear you ask.
It is 30 days until our Wedding Day!
I have a daily countdown timer on the front page of my phone, counting down to our wedding day. As the days have counted down, excitement has risen and at 30 days to go, activity has suddenly kicked into high gear! There is a surge of motivation and drive to get everything done before the Big Day!
Countdowns create a sense of urgency and importance!
Unlike deadlines, which tell you when your task is due, countdowns clearly show how little time you have until your task is due. Seeing how little time remains, pushes our minds into high motivation, forcing us to focus our attention on the task at hand and push aside distractions that would otherwise delay us.
Stop procrastinating, start acting.
If you are a procrastinator, deadlines probably don’t help you; if the deadline is too far into the future, you tell yourself that you have plenty of time and if it is too close, you become paralysed by overwhelm! Since starting is the hardest part of the task, countdown-to-start timers are ideal for procrastinators. The countdown runs backwards, generating a sense of urgency and when it reaches zero the activation energy you need to get started kicks in, much like a rocket blast-off!
How much more would you get done if you scrapped your deadlines in favour of a countdown?
Much Love,
Tania
