the boy who started it

The boy who inspired my anti-bullying coaching program for children turned 18 today! He was 9 years old at the time, and I can still see him sitting in the chair in my office doing the exercises as though it were yesterday.

This young man, for despite my memory of him, that is what he is now, was the first kid whom I had ever coached. He was a great kid, he didn’t deserve the treatment he was getting from his peers, and his parents couldn’t find a solution that stuck. They had tried other assistance for him but nothing had worked. When they brought him to me, I had no experience with coaching children nor with people who were bullied, but I trusted the coaching process and so did his parents so we gave it a go.  I had no idea at the time that it would be so very successful. Within weeks he was strong, happy and alive again; his parents had their son back!

He showed me that children are far better able to grasp the concepts of coaching, emotional intelligence and relationships than most people believe. It was working with him that revealed to me what makes some people easier targets for bullies than others and that there are skills every child can learn that will protect them from bullies. Moreover, his parents were involved in the process, willing to be coached and grow themselves. To this day, I will only work with a child if at least one parent is willing to be coached individually in parallel with the child. It is the secret ingredient to the success of the program.

Thanks to this little boy and his parents who believed in the coaching process, I have gone on to assist many more children who are being teased or bullied at school.

To you young man and your parents, I want you to know that part of your legacy includes all the children (and parents) who have been strengthened thanks to the program you inspired. You have contributed to my growth as a coach in ways that you cannot know; I am a better coach for having worked with your family.  As you embark on your journey into adulthood, I wish for you to always trust in who you are at your core and know that no matter what anyone says or does to you in years to come you are strong; stand tall and let it pass you by.

Your coach,
