A student recently said to me, “You’re an odd duck, Mr. B.”
I was singing while trying not to step on the cracks in the hallway. I smiled at her. She walked away humming the song I was singing.
In the April edition of Inc. they ran an article titled, “Why You Should Keep Things Weird at Work.” The gist of the article highlighted that employees feel more comfortable and produce better work when they can be themselves.
“It means getting employees to reveal their idiosyncrasies and passions, the things that make them human,” the article stated. So crazy is actually our authentic self. I, sadly, would agree. Our culture, our schools, even sometimes our friends and family want us to be somebody else.
It is a hard battle to be yourself in today’s culture.
But it is a battle we must win, simply because it is our life, our joy, our goals we wish to accomplish. That’s why crAzy wins.
“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.” ~ e.e. Cummings
